Constructing the shell and core for a seven-screen cinema and four restaurants

Robertson Yorkshire & East Midlands was appointed by Meyer Bergman to construct the shell and core for a boutique cinema and restaurant scheme, on the site of the old BAE Building near the Broadway shopping centre in the centre of Bradford.

Since originally opening in November 2015, the Broadway Centre offers over 70 shops and eateries, but this final development site had laid undeveloped.

Enhancing the leisure offer in Bradford

Robertson's work on the shell and core scheme paved the way for a project to fit out a seven-screen cinema, including a private screening room, which will be operated by The Light. There will also be four restaurants, adding 40,000 sq ft to the Broadway shopping development in total.

This project is a continuation of a broader scheme that has had originally began in 2004 to regenerate the central area of Bradford. This high quality, boutique cinema will bookend the Broadway Centre and is set to further enhance the leisure offer in the city.

Respecting the context of neighbouring conservation areas

Robertson worked to implement a design that paid heed to the surrounding buildings, which are a range of styles and ages, as well as to respect the three conservation areas nearby: City Centre Conservation Area to the west, Little Germany to the east and Cathedral Precinct to the north.

We built the cinema's foyer to a fully glazed design that allows the activity and lighting within to enliven the facade and the street outside.

Additional elements of the scheme's design include an area of green roofing to help encourage biodiversity was well as providing rainwater attenuation, water and energy saving technologies as well as LED lighting throughout the development.

Overall, the scheme aimed to drastically improve the existing condition of the site, providing an inclusive, sustainable building that will bring new life to a long-neglected street-front.
