Summary
Providing opportunity for every individual
Croft Community School provides education for 90 primary and secondary pupils aged 4-16 with special educational needs including those with moderate learning difficulties and/or autistic spectrum disorders.
Adapting and improving existing built assets
The project involved the partial demolition, alteration and refurbishment of the existing Greencroft School to create the new school. Croft Community School was created to replace Harelaw School, located one mile away, while Greencroft moved to a new campus at North Durham Academy.
The school vision is "that every individual is valued and is given the greatest possible opportunity to achieve their best, so that every individual can become an active, happy and fulfilled citizen in the world."
Amongst other improvements, the remodelling included the mechanical building services, which utilised the existing boiler plant. Electrical works involved a refurbishment and upgrade to the existing system while still using the infrastructure in place for lights and sockets.
Tight access
Tight logistics on site were the main challenge but despite this, we achieved a high standard of finish within the existing structure.
Consideration for the community
During the works, we made donations to local adult learning centre (garden/nursery), gifting timber for heating and construction. We won a Considerate Constructors Scheme Bronze award for our work on site at Croft Community SEN School.
