Fast-tracked warehousing in response to increased production

Robertson constructed new warehousing to support the expansion in production at the Benromach Distillery in Forres, Moray.

Robertson has previously carried out construction and extension work for Gordon & MacPhail, the family business that operates the distillery. Our partnership, supporting the rejuvenation and expansion of the distillery, dates back to 2007 and has included distillery expansion and reconfiguration, maturation warehouses and a visitor centre.

Benromach is one of the few distilleries in Scotland to maintain a handcrafted approach to whisky making, without the use of automated machinery. As part of this traditional process, Benromach malt is matured in dunnage warehouses - long, low, buildings with an earthen floor which helps keep the casks consistently cool all year round and provides optimal conditions.

Robertson constructed two storage warehouses to meet our customer's requirements under a fast track 31-week build programme. As with all of our projects, we look to make savings for the customer wherever possible. Savings were made with the supply chain taking on design responsibility for concrete flooring, while we advised the building would meet requirements without the need for some of the specified elements including soakaways, block piers and fall arrest systems.

With strong demand overseas, Benromach has twice increased production in the past few years, and the warehouses are set to support further growth in the years to come.
