Summary
Transforming a former youth centre into a Pupil Referral Unit for Salford City Council
Broadwalk Green is a newly refurbished and extended Pupil Referral Unit for Salford children unable to attend mainstream schools.
Retaining the former Clifton Youth Centre building and adding a two-storey modular extension, the unit includes teaching spaces, a kitchen, multi-functional hall, staff room, training areas, offices, and a lift, providing vital facilities for young people in the area.
Building capacity
We refurbished the existing building to create a bright and inviting space for young people to learn, upgrading the layout, adding new windows and doors, and installing mechanical and electrical infrastructure along with water and power upgrades.
The two-storey extension significantly expands on the space, allowing for additional classrooms which include food technology, a science block, and art facilities, offering a varied learning environment and flexibility for teaching the PRU’s curriculum.
Making an impact
We supported the local community as part of our commitment to the Build Salford programme, offering valuable work experience opportunities to two unemployed people, demonstrating to potential employers their ability to work in construction.
Clifton PRU pupils attended the live site to view the works in progress first hand. They were taken through an induction and met with our team who explained the importance of health and safety in construction. This exercise was used to engage the pupils in the construction process and help them feel more connected to the new facility.
We also donated £5,000 to Salford City Council’s Alleviating Barriers Fund.
