Summary
A new showroom to precise brand standards
Robertson constructed a 10-car showroom split between Jaguar and Land Rover brands, at Fort Kinnaird on the edge of Edinburgh for John Clark Motor Group.
We also built a 12-vehicle workshop that includes MOT and fast-fit bays, as well as maintenance, office and valet facilities. Externally, we built customer, display and workshop parking, together with associated drainage, services and connections.
The showroom is a single storey-building with mezzanine level, constructed with a steel frame on pad foundations, concrete slab with thickenings and perimeter strip foundations. Externally it has a mix of metal cladding panels and curtain walling. We delivered the project within a tight ten-month schedule.
Innovations to improve safety, increase quality and save money
Design of the car jacks in the workshop, involving pre-fabricated cassettes, minimised their footprint and maximised the available space around the car. The jacks were recessed into the ground, and careful strategies were needed to overcome health and safety issues surrounding deeper excavation and concrete pouring. This technique saved three weeks compared with traditional methods and reduced the risk of working in excavations.
Although working under a traditional contract to a strict global corporate identity brief, we still took every opportunity to make savings for our customer. We advised on plant and waste management best practice to reduce costs, and avoided potential delays by sharing our specialist knowledge of utilities and groundworks.
Delivering precise brand standards
The showroom is designed to the latest Jaguar Land Rover corporate identity and makes best use of the site, facing Whitehill Road and giving a strong presence for these high-end brands.
Robertson constructed the showroom to meet the precise brand standards and enhance the customer experience. We worked meticulously to deliver the required quality for the customer handover bay, luxurious lounge-style waiting area with coffee bar and free wi-fi, and colour and trim section that allows buyers to specify their new car exactly how they want it. Internal finishes include ceramic tiling in both the showroom and service areas.
Community benefits
Despite the project in an edge-of-town retail park and although the contract had no specific social value KPIs, we still engaged extensively with the local community. We held an Employability Workshop with the Edinburgh charity Cyrenians, promoting careers in construction and helping jobseekers to prepare a CV and practice induction courses and interviews. We donated skips to the Craigmillar Community Arts Centre.
