Summary
New community green space on the site of a former primary school
Construction of green space, play areas and pathways
Robertson Civil Engineering designed and built the new community green space, including ground remediation and all hard and soft landscaping.
We created new biodiversity areas and raised-bed allotments, installed outdoor exercise equipment and children's play areas, and developed outdoor education spaces.
The project features open pathways providing accessible connections for pedestrians and cyclists between the town centre to the south and residential areas to the north.
Generating a sense of ownership in the community
The project was created following extensive consultation with residents about the best use for the site.
Fostering community ownership was a key requirement to ensure the space would be embraced by local residents.
This included visiting primary school classes to discuss how they could participate in developing the old school site.
Ground remediation
Despite a design that minimised digging into the existing ground, it was still necessary to break ground in places.
The design was planned in detail so that all interfaces with the existing ground could be planned and prepared in advance. With the full site being contaminated with asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), we engaged a specialist contractor to make all required excavations and manage the initial grass cut, cover and first capping. This meant that the full site was capped as early as possible with careful marking of planned deepenings for future excavations into clean material for trees and foundations. This work was verified and quality assured.
