Summary
Embracing new technology for swifter, safer construction
Moxy Aberdeen Airport is a new hotel situated in Dyce on the outskirts of Aberdeen. It offers 200 hotel rooms and is tailored towards airport users, with Aberdeen Airport being situated within a short walking distance of the hotel.
The project involved the construction and fit-out of a modular, six-storey hotel at the ABZ Business Park. The ground floor contains the reception, bar, restaurant, and IT and meeting facilities, with guest rooms on the upper floors.
Speedy construction through modularisation
To maximise build speed, and increase quality and safety, we used Vastint's innovative modular construction technique. The upper levels were constructed using modular CLT pod construction, manufactured in Italy and transported in sections to be assembled on site.
The pre-fabricated components were built on top of the steel-framed ground floor, where they were bolted together, effectively creating the structure as each floor was added. The modular services were then connected and external cladding installed to create the finished shell. We then completed fixed furnishing and fitting out.
This technique provided a number of benefits, including:
-
quicker construction compared with a traditional build method, allowing the client to generate revenue earlier;
-
enhanced quality thanks to the strict testing and auditing regime of the factory where the components are built;
-
increased safety, as fewer man hours were required on site.
Securing repeat business by pleasing our client
We were originally appointed as project manager for the modular construction of this hotel but, since Vastint were pleased with our performance, we were later awarded the fit-out contract as well. This meant the fit-out works could start immediately after construction, without the need for a new contractor to set up and familiarise themselves with the site.
In addition, we have been awarded the project management contract for a second Moxy hotel in Glasgow.
