Robertson completes seventh project for University of Sheffield
Robertson Construction Yorkshire & East Midlands has completed its latest project for the University of Sheffield, the £8.4m refurbishment of the Elmfield Building, home to the Departments of Politics and Economics.
Originally constructed in the 1930s as the Department for Glass Technology, the refurbishment works have included internal alterations and refurbishments to shared spaces, a new external lift and the replacement of essential plant. This has made the building more accessible, sustainable and energy efficient.
The renovations created contemporary, functional learning environments for the University’s leading politics and economics departments. The 14-month works programme also carefully preserved key features, such as the original flooring, hardwood banisters, commemorative mosaic and the staircases’ glass panelling.
Structural changes were made to improve the building’s layout including the creation of a floor above an existing lecture theatre. Finishes were replaced across the building and accessibility has been improved with the installation of new lifts, providing direct access to all five floors.
Extensive upgrades were also carried out on the building’s infrastructure. This included the safe removal of asbestos, maintenance of the roof, façade, and windows, and the modernisation of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Additionally, fire safety measures were enhanced.
Supporting the University’s net zero targets, a new fuel saving heating system was installed, as well as upgraded insulation and energy efficient glazing further enhancing thermal performance and reducing carbon emissions.
Jonathan Sizer, Regional Managing Director, Robertson Construction Yorkshire & East Midlands, said: "The completion of the Elmfield Building marks another successful handover as we continue to work in close partnership with the University of Sheffield. We’ve transformed this facility into a modern, accessible, and sustainable space that will serve students and staff for years to come. By reimagining the layout, upgrading infrastructure, and prioritising sustainability, we’ve delivered a high-quality solution tailored to the University’s needs."
Mark Holden, Associate Director of Estates Development, University of Sheffield, said: “We’re delighted with the work Robertson has undertaken to upgrade, preserve and enhance the Elmfield Building. Buildings such as this are an important part of the University’s heritage, but are often challenging to upgrade to modern standards. This refurbishment ensures Elmfield can continue to provide the modern, comfortable and accessible facilities our students expect, while at the same time contributing to achieving our ambitious sustainability goals.”
Concurrent to the work on the Elmfield Building, Robertson also refurbished the University’s Goodwin Sports Centre Gymnasium building adjacent to the site. Careful logistics and planning (such as streamlined deliveries and shared welfare facilities) aligned the projects, reducing the impact of the two construction projects within a live campus environment.
Since 2021, Robertson Construction Yorkshire & East Midlands has worked with the University on numerous projects, including a net zero refurbishment of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC); recladding of the Interdisciplinary Centre of the Social Sciences; installation of an electrolyser and storage facility within the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Innovation Centre; construction of the £8m new-build Gene Therapy Innovation and Manufacturing Centre; and works to the Grade II listed Edwardian Building.
