Early Years extensions and refurbishments at Pinkie St Peter’s, St Gabriel’s, and West Barns for East Lothian Council

Robertson has transformed three Early Years nurseries into fresh and modern places for young people to play and learn as part of the Scottish Government’s Early Learning & Childcare project.

The East Lothian facilities were upgraded to enhance existing learning spaces and cater for more Early Years pupils at St. Gabriel’s RC Primary School, West Barns Primary School, and Pinkie St. Peter’s Primary School.

Each nursery extension has been built using our high-quality timber frames, on strip foundations, along with brick, render and metal cladding for the external wall finish, while the internal walls and partitions are timber and metal.

With the free annual provision of early learning and childcare hours nearly doubling to 1140 Hours under a Scottish Government initiative to support child development, the newly upgraded nurseries for East Lothian Council will provide high-quality facilities and the capacity to meet demand.

Pinkie St Peter’s Primary School extension and refurbishment

The largest project was Musselburgh’s Pinkie St. Peter’s Primary School which involved 683m2 1.5 storey new nursery extension including an attractive and colourful mezzanine play area along with a new steel-framed games hall and external landscaping, creating a wonderful space for young people to play and learn.

The school also benefited from general internal refurbishment works and the creation of a new access road.

St Gabriel’s RC Primary School extension and refurbishment

St. Gabriel’s, a 350-pupil school and nursery in Preston Pans, underwent a single-storey two classroom extension.

Our team transformed an existing classroom into a fresh and colourful new nursery playroom, providing a fun and welcoming space, as part of a refurbishment which also included a brand-new kitchen.

West Barns Primary School extension and refurbishment

At West Barns, in Dunbar, our project comprised a 347m2 new build extension to provide a nursery playroom, primary one classroom and library, giving the young people who attend a vibrant and attractive space.

A kitchen revamp and upgrade to the school’s existing games hall was also included.

Building Better Lives

It’s important to us that we support the communities we work in, which is why we do everything we can to have a positive and lasting impact through our social impact activities.

Our various activities in the area throughout the project have generated £4.5m of social value.

To support East Lothian residents and businesses, we provided 596 hours of training which has included health and safety, and Site Management Safety Training Scheme.

We have also taken part in six careers workshops and provided 336 hours of work placements, held primary school site visits, and supported a local poverty charity.

We also supported local businesses by spending £327,000 on supply chain within 10 miles of the nurseries, and nine of our supply chain partners were within 20 miles of the sites.

This focus on supporting local business is consistent with our approach on every project as we look to help communities benefit in any way possible.

We are very proud of the added value we bring to the communities we work in and the lasting impact we support. It’s the Robertson Way.
