Groundworks and infrastructure for five green spaces at a new residential community

Robertson Civil Engineering has delivered green infrastructure works that enabled five green spaces to be created at Hamiltonhill, a 10-year, 670-home affordable housing regeneration project by Queens Cross Housing Association (QCHA) in the Maryhill and Possilpark areas of Glasgow.

The five green spaces – a play park, community park, community garden, link space and tranquil space – provide residents with areas for recreation, exercise, community events and relaxation, in a natural environment.

Scope of works

Carrying out this contract directly for QCHA, our scope included enabling works, site clearance, earthworks, land remediation, substructure foundations, retaining walls, drainage, utilities, hard landscaping and sort landscaping. It also extended to cementitious grouting of shallow mineworkings and mineshaft probing to ensure 100% safety of the site.

Play park

The play park, named the ‘Hammyhill Play Pits’ following consultation by Queens Cross Housing Association with their tenants, includes play equipment for a range of ages and a mixed-use sports pitch, which provide opportunities for aimed to get children involved in active play.

Old School Park – a versatile community space

The Old School Park, also named by the community after a public poll, is a large multi-function community-focused activity space, incorporating a tiered design that we created using gabion baskets. The park, and the neighbourhood greening more broadly, contributes to Queens Cross’ vision of “Providing excellent housing in vibrant communities”.

Link Space and Tranquil Space with sustainable drainage

The Link Space is a smaller, connecting area that sits between the Play Park and the Tranquil Space. We have built sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) to a design that will promote natural biodiversity.

We delivered the quieter Tranquil Space that also incorporates SUDS infrastructure, opening out into a green open space, to promote relaxation and connections between the community.

This integrated SUDS network, which links to the canal, improves flood prevention and climate change adaptation capacity and reduces demand on the combined sewer network, facilitating sustainable construction of new homes.

Community Garden – placemaking for a new community

Situated next to the Bardowie Street Hall, this space and was undertaken in partnership with the Clay Community Church. The seating, pergola, hardscape, lawn and soft landscaping combine to form a community focused garden.

The community garden, together with all five spaces, create a sense of place in Hamiltonhill, whilst improving resident’s health & wellbeing and biodiversity of flora & fauna.

Funding

The green spaces were made possible after the project received funding from the Green Infrastructure Fund, led by NatureScot and part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Civil engineering works to support affordable housing

In addition to the green infrastructure works, Roberton Civil Engineering has delivered a contract for Urban Union, supporting their development of housing for Queens Cross HA. We carried out site clearance, earthworks, cut and fill operations, substructure foundations, retaining walls, boundary/screen walls, drainage, hard landscaping, soft landscaping (topsoiling only) and plot works.
