Summary
Refurbishment and repair of a North West cultural asset
Robertson Construction North West is rejuvenating Manchester Art Gallery (MAG) through a mixture of refurbishment, repair and new works.
The gallery needed to update and protect areas of the building, improve the functionality of the space for staff and visitors and make sure back of house areas could be used for long-term archive storage.
It is most important to MAG that the gallery remains open to the public and fully operational throughout the works.
Scope of works
- Roof lantern replacement
- Secure art store
- Front of house toilet refurbishment
- Waterproofing works
Maintaining full accessibility and safety throughout
With the gallery’s city centre location, specific security requirements and an extensive events programme, we have had to carefully plan our works to keep the gallery running with no impact or risk to their activities during the project. Through a variety of approaches – including purpose-built basement welfare area, biometric access control, extra security measures and a stringent logistics plan – we have ensured complete security of the valuable collection and the absolute safety of all staff and visitors.
Community impact
To deliver long-lasting community impact, we have designed a targeted programme of activities to address local priorities in consultation with Manchester City Council, ranging from employing 6 local people within greater Manchester, to 70 weeks of apprenticeships and 308 hours of employability support.
Procurement route
The project was procured through North West Construction Hub. This brings a range of benefits, including a quick route to market and social value guarantees around boosting the local economy and opportunities.
