Combined education and community facilities
Robertson Tayside has completed a £15.6 million contract to construct a primary school and nursery campus in the Whitfield area of Dundee in the north east of the city.
The project has been designed by Holmes Miller Architects and houses two schools and a nursery. It replaces Longhaugh Primary, St Francis RC Primary (formerly St Vincent's and St Luke's and St Matthew's) and Quarryview Nursery.
The project was procured through the Scape Major Works framework (now superseded by Major Works Scotland), part of the Scape National Construction framework.
Robertson Tayside built the campus in partnership with Willmott Dixon.
Robertson Engineering Services provided M&E services and Robertson Specialist Division carried out internal joinery and fit-out works.
A three-storey school for over 800 pupils
The new schools are designed over three storeys for a maximum combined roll of 868 pupils and a 95 full-time equivalent (FTE) three to five-year-olds at the nursery. A separate nursery area for up to 30 FTE two-year-olds is also included in the project.
Facilities for the community
As well as providing an educational environment for local pupils, the campus also hosts additional facilities for the community, ensuring that the building can be used by a cross-section of the local population and provides best value for Dundee City Council.
Gold-standard community benefits alongside construction
Providing lasting benefits to the community alongside our construction work was a key goal.
Initiatives included emergency first aid training for subcontractors with trainers from Heartstart Discovery introducing them to techniques that can help prevent life-threatening outcomes.
Among numerous education and training placements, two 16-year-old school leavers completed a week's work placement and were then offered a Groundworks Apprenticeship with subcontractor Dundee Plant.
The project won a Gold award with the Considerate Constructors' Scheme in 2019, in recognition of outstanding performance in: care for appearance, respect for the community, protection of the environment, securing of everyone's safety, and valuing of our workforce.
