Summary
A historic transformation: the rebirth of Tyneside’s Pattern Shop
Robertson has completed a remarkable transformation of an iconic building. Originally used by the world-famous designer Robert Stephenson, the building now serves as a modern workspace for the creators of today. The project was previously stalled after the collapse of previous contractors but got back on track after Robertson construction was appointed. The shop has riverside views with less than a 5-minute walk from Central Station making it a prime location.

Sustainability and renewable energy
The redevelopment of the pattern shop had sustainability at the top of its priorities. Features such as low VOC paint, a natural ventilation strategy, and de-stratification fans create high air quality throughout the building. The pattern shop is focused on renewable energy using PV panels, battery storage, air source heat pumps, ensuring that no gas is used. The office spaces use “intelligent” LED lighting and a remarkable 98% of waste conversion works has been diverted from landfill.
Community and economic growth initiatives
This redevelopment will bring both social and economic growth to the local and regional area. A programme of community wealth building activities was delivered through the project, including Health and safety workshops as a part of the Prince’s Trust programme as well as site visits and skills development training with local schools. Robertson has also had 20 apprentices at projects throughout the city and at The Pattern Shop.
