Transformative building upgrades for a key cultural building.

Pitlochry Festival Theatre (PFT) is Scotland’s largest producing Theatre with a strong profile locally, regionally and nationally as a creator of accessible, engaging and stimulating theatre.

The key work on this project was the refurbishment/replacement of the existing roof covering to the portion of the main theatre building and replacement of the external curtain walling. We also carried out other alteration works inside the theatre at the same time of working on the external envelope activities.

Upgrades for the Theatre and the wider creative sector

Robertson delivered the Vision 2021 programme of transformative building upgrades for the Theatre, which build upon PFT’s proud history to now create a centre of excellence for the 21st century.

The refurbished facility can now combine high quality theatre with a new approach to vocational training and skills development, which responds to talent pipeline gaps within the creative sector, and an unrivalled visitor experience – all situated in an extraordinary location and magnificent setting.

Vision 2021 has been developed with the support and participation of Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, Creative Scotland and Perth & Kinross Council. PFT designed Vision 2021 to benefit not just the theatre itself but also the wider performing arts sector in Scotland.

Phased project delivery

Robertson phased the works for the most efficient project delivery as well as minimising impact on the theatre and its operations, staff and visitors.

Phase 1A and 1B of the project focused on the studio theatre, entrance foyer and outdoor performance spaces; as well as the new roof and glazing.

Phase 2 focused on the main theatre, catering, foyers, production facilities and remaining plant.

Phase 3 plans involve landscape enhancements to the garden and woodland setting.

Phase 4 proposals conclude the works with a new rehearsal room and an accommodation block, leading to more efficient working.

Keeping the theatre running while on site

There were a number of challenges to overcome whilst working within a live building. To keep theatre operations running unhindered, we installed a fully decorated temporary partition covering the full length of the theatre foyer to separate construction works from Theatre staff and members of the public. This allowed the existing curtain walling to be fully removed and new installed curtain walling without having to close the area, allowing the theatre to trade and the public to enjoy performances.

Recycled construction materials find a new life on stage

The construction materials originally used for temporary partitions was donated to the Theatre for building of future stage sets. This was greatly welcomed by PFT management and set designers.

Procurement

This redevelopment project was procured through Procurement Hub - Major Projects 2 Framework with Robertson Northern being the delivery partner.
