'Home of golf' refurbishment delivered to a tee

Robertson has delivered a luxury extension and refurbishment at the clubhouse of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, the oldest golf club in the world. The club, originally established in 1754, has been a leading authority in golf for over two and a half centuries. The clubhouse overlooks the famous Old Course at St Andrews.

We have altered, extended and refurbished the existing basement of the clubhouse, which overlooks the 18th hole of The Old Course at St Andrews links, one of seven courses in the town – known worldwide as the home of golf.

Key facts

  • new male locker room area
  • bag storage racking
  • new female locker rooms
  • large members lounge
  • improved golf concierge area

Technical expertise for a complex basement extension

Leveraging our technical expertise, the luxury refurbishment and extension project was delivered predominately underground, where works have tripled space by extending the basement to the north and south of the clubhouse.

These complex works were carried out while the surrounding golf facilities remained in operation, ensuring minimal disruption to the golf club which has over 2,500 members. Excavation, piled retaining structures, structural alterations, reinforcements and extensive temporary works were carefully managed.

A luxury interior

The finished project enjoys a high specification interior, designed by Goddard Littlefair, to a standard befitting one of the most prestigious golf clubs in the world.

While providing enhanced spaces, it was important that the unique rich heritage and personality of the clubhouse were not lost. A high-quality, luxury interior was delivered with specific materials to complement the existing spaces. This included oak panelling, timber flooring and marble finishes alongside bespoke concierge and reception desks.

The new space has created new female and male locker rooms which include a heritage members’ lounge, improved concierge area as well as benching, racking for golf trolleys, showers and toilets. This is the first time that the R&A has introduced a female locker room, meaning members no longer need to make use of lockers at Forgan House.
