Robertson Construction Central West has been chosen to carry out the refurbishment works on Prestwick Swimming Pool.

Robertson was invited to negotiate the refurbishment of Prestwick Swimming Pool with South Ayrshire Council, following an introduction through the Alliance Leisure project at Citadel, Ayr. The refurbishment project aims to enhance the building's performance and energy efficiency, including upgrades to insulation and the ventilation system. The scope of work includes replacing the roof, stripping and replacing the roof and wall cladding, as well as upgrading mechanical and electrical equipment.

Transforming the Prestwick Pool

The gym and reception area had works carried out recently and existing tiles were set aside for re-use in the re-installed ceiling where possible.

When the Bellevue Road facility reopens in the late summer of 2025, it will feature a new roof, upgraded exterior wall cladding, and a state-of-the-art air handling ventilation system. The building will also benefit from an enhanced water supply and improved storage. Additionally, its environmental impact will be reduced with the installation of solar panels.

Funding the project

The project is partially funded through Salix, which is a 100% interest free, conditional loan to public sector organisations to improve their onsite and energy efficiency.

Working in partnership with other centres

During the closure, club fitness members will have access to both the gym and pool at the Citadel Leisure Centre in Ayr. In addition, all fitness equipment from Prestwick has been temporarily relocated to Whitletts Activity Centre and is available to anyone with a current Council Sport and Leisure membership that allows access to any of the gyms. New customers can also take advantage of the pop-up gym through a new custom membership, costing just £15 per month. More details can be found here - Whitletts Pop up Gym - South Ayrshire Council

Additionally, Troon Leisure Club and Maybole Leisure Club will be available, as these facilities are included in the standard membership. For those who currently attend classes at Prestwick Leisure Club, there’s the option to upgrade their membership for just £5 per month to access fitness classes at the Citadel.

“We want to ensure that our leisure facilities provide a quality experience to customers for many years to come. To help achieve this we’ve already doubled the size of the gym at Prestwick Leisure Club and these new works will also expand changing and shower facilities.”
Councillor Brian Connolly
Sport and Leisure Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council
“Our buildings need to be as energy efficient as possible. Replacing the roof and the cladding at Prestwick Leisure Club will improve insulation and ultimately save on utility bills. These are significant works, and this is reflected in the timescales, but we have other facilities which customers can access.”
Councillor Martin Kilbride
Buildings, Housing and Environment Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council
“Robertson has a wealth of experience and it’s great that they are going to be part of the project. It’s important that we continue to listen to our customers and adapt our facilities to meet their needs. These improvements will transform Prestwick Leisure Club ensuring it continues to benefit residents and visitors alike.”

Tourism, Culture and Rural Affairs Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council
