Summary
Building extension for one of the top grammar schools in the country
Robertson worked with Newcastle-upon-Tyne Royal Grammar School (RGS), one of the top private schools in the country, to deliver a new building to support the students and teachers in their learning environment.
Robertson constructed an extension to the school on the corner of Eskdale Terrace and Lambton Road in Newcastle which formerly housed a 1930's swimming pool and changing rooms. This includes a new library, lecture room, seminar rooms, IT hub and care centre encompassing pastoral and medical services for students – plus additional teaching space (including laboratories, effectively extending the Science and Technology Centre).
In addition to these facilities, the new build facility incorporates an 'Agora' gathering place for students to come together to exchange ideas and thoughts on their studies.

Working in a populated area and on a live school site
The project was carried out in a heavily populated housing area and in the grounds of a live school.
This meant that the start and finish times of work on site, as well as deliveries of materials were controlled to cause minimum disruption, and forward planning was vitally important to the successful running of the site.
In-house engineering services provide efficiencies
We used our own in-house M&E team to deliver the extensive building services required for this extension. This provided significant efficiencies, which was especially important as deliveries and work packages had to be tightly coordinated on this live site.
Electrical services included: a small power and data system, general and emergency lighting, door access control, CCTV, intruder alarm and fire alarm systems.
Mechanical services included general ventilation, VRF (variable refrigerant flow) cooling, underfloor heating, plumbing and sanitaryware. The VRF cooling was installed in areas of the school that are expected to get hot, ensuring comfort for the pupils and teachers.
We installed central controls for these services, as well as connecting them to the existing building management system, allowing the Grammar School staff one point of control over numerous buildings on their campus.
